Freud called this the ego. I would say that it is the "observer" that is found within meditation.

I would say that I would agree that it is the identity of the individual.

I would even go further and identify it as the individualized "Christ-Consciousness" that is within each of us. Capable of "seeing" our unity as well as our singular manifestations.

This would be the voice within that can calm the guilt of the superego and the attack of the id/through what essentially comes down to addictive behaviors.

Freud's ego as I understand it, would not be confused with the Inner Guidance System that I acknowledge as the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit as I understand it today is that Voice within that begins so very small and still is connected to God and the Christ within us that is aware of who we truly are and has never lost association or recognition of God or of Self within God.

IE when we allow the one we call "ourself" (the one Freud calls ego) to listen to the promptings of the Holy Spirit/Christ within us, we may rest in a comforting witness known as peace. As well as joy because the truth of the confusion (which is met with absolving forgiveness) and the reconciliation of that confusion is found within that association. Which we may term "being One With God".
