I wonder if this does not hint at the real issue rather than define it? Could it be that the question is: as a society, or even as a race, do we choose to sustain a traditional standard that separates society into have's and have-nots or do we find ways that the "new haves" ensure that opportunities are given for all to raise their position and that have-nots are given incentives to take advantage? And can what is endearing be somehow be "creatively" preserved?

This construct could be used to address a lot of the realities we get to look at in 2020 and beyond.

Might we consider how to create a "transitional space" figuratively speaking that gives dignity to all involved in the discussion?

Evolution in societies will happen. Whether it is traumatic or civilized, and fruitful for all, is up to us as a conscious endeavor. What may be most significant, is that we come to understand that it takes all of us having an attitude of cooperation, and participation, in the creative process for the best case scenario to play out.
